Washing your activewear correctly

Are You Washing Your Activewear Correctly? Probably Not.

November 20, 2019

It’s no secret that here at All Fenix, we are experts when it comes to activewear. Like, it’s our LIFE. We are dedicated to creating high quality, fashionable activewear that supports both form an function. As hard as we can work on upholding this standard, no activewear is safe from improper laundry methods. Believe it or not, most people are washing their activewear incorrectly!

There’s no worse feeling than opening up your washing machine to find your clothes have been compromised, so we want to let you in on the secrets of washing your activewear CORRECTLY.

WASH ON COLD

If you didn’t know, hand washing is always preferred when washing your activewear. But there probably isn’t a single person on the planet that has enough time to do that (unless you’re a lucky duck with this function on your machine). The next best thing is washing on a gentle cycle with cold water. Cold water conserves the integrity of stretch fabric, while hot water can cause it to lose its shape. Washing on a gentle cycle eliminates the possibility of snagging the stitching and reduces abrasions on the fabric.

WASH INSIDE OUT

Obviously, the inside of your leggings have the most contact with your skin and therefore will absorb all your sweat, dead skin, and dirt. It’s safe to say it needs the most attention. So turning your activewear inside out will provide more direct contact between all that dirt and the detergent. Plus, this will maintain the integrity and color of the outer layer of the fabric.

USE A WASHING BAG

Similar to the purpose of washing on a gentle cycle, putting your activewear in a washing bag will help protect the stability of the fabric and stitching while still getting them clean! It will also protect any detailing on the garments.

AVOID FABRIC SOFTENER

Fabric softener can block the moisture wicking properties in your clothing which means it will end up smelling worse! As the name of it suggests, fabric softener SOFTENS clothing. But by nature, activewear is already soft and comfortable (at least, All Fenix activewear is!). By using fabric softener while washing, you’re actually compromising the structure of your activewear, making the elastic stretch out and the stitching lose it’s hold. To avoid any excessive wear and tear, stick to an organic, gentle detergent only!

DRY FLAT & OUT OF THE SUN

Always make sure to dry your activewear flat in order to keep the shape of the fabric more effectively. And avoid sunlight at all costs! The sun can cause the color of the fabric to fade and your activewear can look “washed out” because of it.

Like we said, we KNOW activewear. And it’s such a shame when you have to throw away your favorite pair of leggings because they got damaged during your washing process. So to ensure that your activewear lasts as long as possible, start implementing these laundry methods into your washing routine. And if you need an activewear upgrade, we got you covered!
